Kolumbie dreczy plaga zamknietych restauracji i kin. Chyba nikomu nie chce sie zdejmowac starych szyldow. I tak w Cartagenie w restauracji wegetarianskiej Govinda dziala apteka, w Medellín w tej samej restauracji (siec?) spozywczak a w Cali chyba jakis inny sklep. Dodatkowo w Cali w kinie Ipancine (gdzie zawedrowalismy skuszeni seansem) jest chyba supermarket. Coz za zwodniczy kraj :)
Nowoscia dla mnie nawyklego do naszego wiejskiego tuningu sa stroboskopy zamocowane pod swiatlami co bardziej awangardowych taksowek. Dozwolone? A czemu nie? Im wiecej halasu i zamieszania sie tu zrobi, tym lepiej :) Swiatla mijania tez mienia sie wszystkimi kolorami teczy i nikomu to nie przeszkadza. Ach, po co nam byla ta Lunia Leuropejska :)
Dwa pytania motoryzacyjne: Do czego uzywany jest tutaj klakson? Odpowiedzi:
a) do podrywania lasek na ulicy
b) do ostrzegania, ze ma sie pierwszenstwo

GM po prostu nie wprowadza tu roznych marek jak w Europie dla mydlenia oczu,ale jedzie rowno po Chevvych. Tak wiec mamy Chevroleta Astre, Corse, Optre (cos chyba miedzy Vectra a Omega, model jakby luksusny :), Matiza (ale sa tez Daewoo Matiz), Charade, Spark itp.

Dzieki kampanii Viaja Colombia, czyli strzezonym przez wojsko karawanom, ludzie od trzech lat znowu zaczeli poruszac sie po kraju inaczej niz samolotem. Inni zas nienawidza za faszystowska maniere sprawowania i kumanie sie z wojskiem. Dysydenci, oponenci polityczni, niewygodni studenci sa tu ponoc zastraszani lub po prostu znikaja, a wszystkie media kontroluje rzad. Turysta ma czuc sie bezpiecznie a mieszkancy maja czytac wersje wydarzen w prasie oficjalnej. Jest tez nieoficjalna ale nikt prawie jej nie czyta poza garstka inteligencji. W marcu wybory parlamentarne i prezydenckie (hehe, skad to znamy), co chwila ginie jakis kandydat (doslownie w czasie pobytu w Cali w ciagu 3 dni czytalismy u chlopakow gazete i co dnia byl naglowek o jakims zabojstwie politycznym. So in Cartagena there´s a vegetarian place called Govinda but now it´s a pharmacy, only it´s still called a restaurant In Medellín in the same restaurant (a chain?) a grocery store is operating and in Cali it could be a fastfood joint but I can´t remember. In addition, in Cali there´s a big movie theater called Ipancine where we wanted to see a late nite movie but it´s a supermarket or something similar now..Anyway it´s closed. This is a tricky country to navigate : )
Cabbies frequently use strobe lights just under lowbeams here. Legal? Why not? The brighter and noisier, the better, and Im starting to like it. Lowbeams also come here in all colors possible and no one seems to be bothered. Why did we need the whole EU standardization thing? : )
Two car-related questions: what do people use horns here for?
a) letting a cool chick walking down the street know you dig her
b) warning the other guy you have the right of way
c) warning the other guy you don´t have the right of way but will pass anyway
d) informing customers you´re available (for cabbies)
e) informing customers you´re full (for buses)
f) saying hello to another driver passing you on a deserted country road
g) the same as we use them in Europe, to hurry someone up or warn about danger

And what do people use turn signals for? Answer: “turn what?” Well, yeah, I guess I´m lucky I don´t have to drive here. Loco! But soooooo full of life! : )
American influence is notable here but since gringos are generally not welcome, this influence is somewhat distorted. So Colombians buy fuel in gallons (fuel economy is also given in km/gallon rather than l/100km as we do in Europe) but their gallon is exactly 5l. Weight is expressed in pounds, but their pound is exactly 500g. Practical? Definitely. Strange? No doubt about that. Curiously enough, their dates also follow the US system, so Christmas Eve here would fall on 12/24/2005 for example.
It just dawned on me that president Uribe is not everybody´s role model around here. We hear it´s fifty-fifty when it comes to his supporters and enemies. Most Colombians we met claim he´s a great guy and are grateful for vastly improving security in the country and it´s hard to disagree. We were told that due to his Viaja Colombia campaign it´s been three years since Colombians dare to travel otherwise than by air. Yet we spoke to some people who did not take kindly to his authoritarian methods of government and for his close relations with the military. Apparently, some dissidents, rebellious students or just people who are against the system are said to have been threatened or removed. Tourists do feel safe, of course, but it´s a whole new chapter. And as the government controls the official media, the media create an idyllic, fault-free image of the situation in the country. And of course, no one reads the unofficial media. Now the elections are coming and from what the press says, there are a lot of political assassinations going here now. Busy season, as it seems. Every now and then someone is removed from list of parliamentary candidates for relations with the right-wing extremists from the jungle (paramilitares) but some have said Uribe himself has ties with them, except it´s all hush-hush. Now I don´t know what to think…

Finally got caught up on the blog! Sounds excellent. Good to see you're still out there on the road. Go you!. And.. Tell the Colombians they aren't so special. Americans aren't liked anywhere else either! That's one of the reasons I quit!. ps. thanky for English translation. My Polish isn't quite up to scratch :)
